Read to Self
During Read to Self, students work on independent reading tasks. Read to Self helps students become better readers. During Read to Self, students observe the following guidelines:
- Read the whole time.
- Read a good fit book.
- Sit still.
- Read quietly.
- Be an active and engaged reader.
2. Work on Writing
Work on Writing
During Work on Writing, students will be doing a variety of writing tasks. Some writing tasks include district required quarterly writing in the genres of narrative, informative, and opinion. Students have a writer's notebook they use to organize their writing. Working on Writing helps students to become better writers. During Work on Writing, students observe the following guidelines:
- Write the whole time.
- Follow the writing process.
- Stay focused and engaged.
- Underline words you think you may have misspelled to come back to later.
3. Word Work
Word Work
During Word Work, students expanded vocabulary to allow for more fluent reading and writing thus speeding up the ability to comprehend what is read and get thinking down on the paper. Some Word Work activities include:
- Word Ladders
- Word Board Games
- Computer & iPad Word Games
- Vocabulary Journaling
4. Read with Someone
Read with Someone
During Read with Someone, students work on their accurate and fluent reading. We spend much of a Read with Someone time reading with 1st and 2nd grade students.
5. Listen to Reading
Listen to Reading
Listen to Reading allows students to listen to fluent and accurate reading. It also allows students to access on-grade level selections that might be above their current reading level.
